THREE POEMS from TOM TUTHILL
WE ARE A MISERABLE PEOPLE

We are a miserable people
Extracting the wealth of others
Poisoned and giving of our infections
Unsatisfied with simple murder
Ignorant
Intelligent
We pluck the leeches off
Grind them with mortar and pestle
To feed our children.
We are dirty
Savorous
Unconcerned with repulsion
Belching reeking expulsive
Water does not cleanse
Fire is to burn
Warmth, light do not protect the weak
We laugh at the weakness.
The humor is always about death
Ours or theirs
It is almost always funny.
