TRANSLATIONS - Francis Jammes

A CHILD READS THE ALMANAC
tr George Wallace

A child reads the almanac close to her egg basket. Apart from the Saints
and the time she takes to read, she contemplates the beautiful signs
of the skies: Goat, Bull, Ram, Fish, etcetera. A little country girl!

She has come to believe that above her, in the constellations,
there are country markets, with asses, bulls, rams, goats and fish.
It is undoubtedly the Market of the Sky which she reads.

When the page turns to the sign of the Balances,
she's got it figured out - in the sky, like at the grocers
one weighs out coffee, salt, and consciences.
