FALL 2011

Deborah Hauser

VERSIONS

If you were the wolf, herding sheep
& I was your mother -- but you are mother
& I am red-spanked naughty. Once

(upon a time) there was grandmother’s.
I was undeveloped woods.
I thought you were the huntsman,

but you were red well water.
I courted you with russet-tailed
highlights. Mother would not be

outfoxed. She put up a stoplight –
at the intersection of Park & Desire,
I am the wolfmother & the wolf & the wolf-

master of your gaunt hunger. Together,
we are frothed moonlight, rabid,
without ancestry.
