Fall/Winter 2017

Denise Low

WHITE DEER, AGAIN

*
Tremors wake me.
Tree shadows scatter on walls.
*
                Aforgotten yard of waist-high straw
the only unmown place for miles
                grass tramped each night
                at dawn bodies vanished
no prints.
*
In silver light they pause
where the maple once stood.
Under that ghost canopy
on rot-soft must.
*
Bodies weighted with bone and flesh.
The slight shudder of their hooves.
Moon adds its lick.
