Fall/Winter 2017

Francine Witte

LOVE IS LIKE AN OLD LAMP

that we rub for wishes but get none.
We know this, and still we pick up
the lamp, blow off the dust.
We try, try again. We ignore the omens
of unanswered calls because who calls
anyone anymore? Or unreturned texts
because people are really, really busy.
And once love is out of its lamp
it grows ogre second by second,
laughs as it stomps your face,
puffs up its chest and monsters
through the town you used to be.
