THE DEATH OF GRACE AND BEAUTY

Two swans patrol the inlet,
dip their majestic heads into
the water to
then paddle hard, their wings
pumping and soon take off,
their huge wings whirring
the air overhead.
I watch them from the dock
then walk the beach
where I come upon the body
of a swan left by the tide,
its feathers still startlingly white,
its body still, shockingly still
like I’ve never seen a swan before.
