FALL/ WINTER 2009

Charlene Knadle
AT THE OFFICE

Nothing seemed right any more
but nothing was wrong either--
everything in motion as usual,
people wishing each other
a good day, scurrying off
to complete some task,
briefcase or envelopes in hand.
You winked at me,
noticing me noticing.

I smiled without knowing
which of your selves
you meant to convey--
a familiar conundrum
I didn't try to solve
in the midst of chaos.
Uncertain times are best
for change, and what I most
wanted to change was you.
