FALL/ WINTER 2011

Maxine McKenzie-Materowski

(UNTITLED)

Embracing the hope in me
Sometimes with just a simple smile
(Quiet victories for days past)
A deep breath for the days ahead
Life was never that simple before
Before the days of a joint here
A bottle there
And pills everywhere
To get through one day
Just one more day
To get out of bed
Just to buy another can of Colt 45
(That can always brought me closer to Billy Dee)
Today he’s on my facebook page and I like it like that
Just like the rest of my days now
You see it’s current ‘cause I live in the present moment now
Not the past, beaten into submission by my momma
Nor the future, who knows what lies ahead?
But just for today I can put my best foot forward
And cope with what’s in front of me now
To say ouch! When it hurts (not drop a pill, fix or a drink)
Face my fears with a smile because the monster is only temporary
That is my Hope
Just for today
