Fred’s Ann was buried yesterday.
Last night he went to bed
and at 3 AM reached over
as he has for 62 years
but now could only remember
her body’s softness,
the curve of her back,
the heaviness of her breasts,
her fragrant hair. Now he sits
chewing his toast with no one
to ask what kind of cheese to buy
and whether the fruit
at A&P or Stop & Shop is better.
