FALL/ WINTER 2014

David Mayerhoff

ROBOTS

He wakes up exactly on time
He gets to where he is expected
Exactly on time
With exactly the right nutrition

Nothing fazes him
He shows no mood swings
Never lets loose
Always in control

Even when out of control
It is expected and conventional
He is predictable, dependable
Reliable and acceptable

He is anonymous
Because he is same person
With a different name
Doing the same thing

His highs and lows
Are indistinguishable
Passion displays
Are taking vanilla instead of chocolate

Standing out
Breaking wind quietly
Burping politely
And coughing soul- fully

He is productive, steady
The backbone of society
Does what is expected
Lives as is expected

Made of strong stock
Non- temperamental
Salt of the earth
Accepting life in stride

He defines the status quo
He is the status quo
Under nondescript in Webster's
Is his name

And yet
Why do I want to shake him?
