FALL/ WINTER 2008

Michael Hood
HIGH-STEPPING

(Ronkonkoma New York)

They fall all about me and on me
in these woods of whited oak and pine:
soft, silent snow kisses from a loving God
aware of my missing you this winter night
which is 56 years into the eternal now:
that winter of '48 when we were oneing
in the boned woods deep behind our house:
high-stepping the smooth thin crust of old snow
so as to capture the pleasure of sound
reaching out to wake morning from its silence.
Ohhhh, it hurts: the eternal now of then.
