FALL 2009

Michael Henson

JEMEZ, NEW MEXICO

A dust devil stalks the plaza
peels up paperscrap
loose tobacco
and red dust gathered from the four directions
by the winds of the four directions.
The dust devil whirls
now the size of a man
now the size of a larger man
now twice the size of a man
and now disperses like a man dismembered
and settles the dust
among the dust-colored adobes of the pueblo.

Michael Henson's most recent work Crow Call, an extended elegy for the murdered activist Buddy Gray. His column, "Hammered: Essays on Poverty and Addiction," appears monthly in StreetVibes, the newspaper of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless."
