I am the
brown earth
Of northern California
Asleep under the hot sun
Soil between the almond trees
And the avocado bushes.
I shadow the wind
Deep into canyons
Where the northern heat
Is a million poems.
I call upon the rain
And the lowly winds
To be bound by the words
Of love that hide in
The lonely heart and
Behind the sad eyes
Of this land.
