SUMMER 2001

Cornelius Eady

BESSIE SMITH

I notice an arm, crooked
Out an open car window
In California

And imagine her sleeve
As the car in front of me
Hugs a curve.

Unbidden trick of light,
Now she briefly returns
From wherever
Things wander, abused,
And waves
An August
Breeze
Cooling sweat off
Her tuned and haunted skin.

Cornelius Eady is the 2000-2001 visiting writer at City College
