UNWINDING ROAD
                for Britta Stein

The road that wound me away
to a deathtrap hotel in
                                       La Paz
                                       Baja
I had seen on the
                                       Rainy River
                     and anywhere north
my foot that almost touched a
half-naked fan cord when I
was getting out of
                                       la ducha
                     had
yet to arrive in
                                       Bangkok
                     it seemed
will walk me toward living
                                       Chiricahua Peak
                     any
time the road itself will unwind and
I may meet a trogon along it
