George & Elizabeth Custer were there
when that learn'd astronomer lectured,
with charts & graphs clarified the cosmos,
counted galaxies, explained axes & orbits,
laid out the heavens in grids, all that vast
drift & flow regimented into
professorial conclusions & projections.
"The man's a wonder," George later
exclaimed to Libbie while guiding her
by an elbow across Broadway where
they near tripped over a bearded inebriate
wobbling in full moonlight.
