I leave this rule for others when I’m dead,
Be always sure you’re right, then go ahead.
Davy Crockett, 1836
Who among us, Davy—
from poets and politicians
to priests and platoon leaders…
from Genghis Khan and Gaddafi
to Pope Alexander and Henry VIII…
as well as every Hitler who ever
pulled the genocidal trigger…
and let’s not forget the Gandhis
and blesséd Mother Teresas…
Yes, who among us—oh folk hero
of the ratty coon-skin cap—
ever paused and thought:
I’m sure I am wrong. |
