Barbara Hickson

SETTLEMENT AT BARKIN BECK

Ecclesiastes 1:9, 'The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.'

Let's just stand, arms outstretched, eyes closed
and imagine how the people - the families, friends, children -
of this Dark Age settlement closed their eyes
to let the warm spring sun shine pink through their lids,
how they felt the light breeze in their hair,
how deeply they welcomed shy shoots of green,
the fluffs of pussy willow splitting beetle-brown husks,
how their animals made dark green tracks across fields,
how the present is yesterday's future, tomorrow's past,
how we live in a slender place.
With acknowledgement to Mankh (Walter E Harris III)

Barbara Hickson lives on the eastern edge of Lancaster overlooking the Bowlandfells which provide inspiration for much of her poetry. She is currently studying for an M.A. in Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and her work has been published in magazines and on-line journals.
