TURN OFF THE WORLD

Events press too hard, a game without rules,
a line I recall from years ago
when war and famine, hatred and anger
didn’t fill my lunchbox

I must take a break,
join my fairytale world
then return to make things soft again,
the way I soften my hands with cream

Wishes fall from my tears
No cream rich enough
and my pockets frayed
I fear monsters lurk,

not under beds
nor behind huge forest trees,
but walking among us
and--this, most frightening--within.
