Dead animals and dead dreams
fallen trees and abandoned plans
The road goes on    straight ahead
not caring for the litter of leavings
by the side of the road

Un-swept autumn leaves and discarded loves
broken branches and broken promises
The road speeds on    without pause
not noticing heaps of lies and torn hopes
by the side of the road

When winter wallops hard ground with dirty snow
all fall’s finery    now crushed debris    is buried
The road creeps on   slippery with ice crystals
throwing slush onto forlorn embankments
All's forgotten   on the side of the road.
